Senior Welding Technician

POSITION SUMMARY: Performs welding and cutting as required in the maintenance and fabrication of equipment and products for the university.


  • Lays out, fits, and weld fabricated, cast, and forged components to assemble structural forms, such as machinery frames, tanks, pressure vessels, furnace shells and building and bridge parts, according to blueprints.
  • Selects equipment and plans layout, assembly, and welding, applying knowledge of geometry, physical properties of metal machining weld shrinkage, and welding techniques.
  • Lays out, positions, aligns, and fits components together.
  • Bolts, clamps and tack-welds parts to secure in position for [Welder, Tack (welding)].
  • Sets up equipment and welds parts, using arc, gas-shielded arc, or gas welding equipment [Welder, Arc, Mig, and Tig welding].
  • May assemble parts by bolting and riveting.
  • May repair products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping, and reassembling parts, using cutting torch, straightening press, and hand tools, and be designated Welder, Structural Repair (welding).


  • Display safe and efficient techniques to perform the tasks required with suitable equipment and materials
  • Display sufficient communication skills to understand the scope of work and time constraints
  • Show ability to perform simple math and layout problems
  • Driving motorized vehicles
  • Working around machines
  • Working above floor level
  • Exposure to dust, fumes, and gases
  • Exposure to marked changes in temperature
  • Repetitive foot movement to operate foot controls
  • Repetitive hand movements (firm grasp, fine manipulation, grasp and pull)
  • Frequent head and neck flexion, rotation

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Safety training required to safely and efficiently perform tasks.  Some knowledge of welding and cutting equipment, practices, and materials to satisfy given job quality requirements. 

Required Education: High school graduate or GED
Required Experience: One to two years related experience
