Product Line Supervisor

Position Summary: A Product Line Supervisor works with people as well as with words. The supervisor oversees a group of editors and lead editors on the product-line level to produce BJU Press K-12 educational materials. A supervisor usually oversees several product lines and works closely with the leadership of other BJU Press departments to complete projects. Examples of product lines include "Math, grades 1-12" and "Science, grades 1-12."

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • OVERSEE THE EDITING OF BJU PRESS EDUCATIONAL PRODUCTS, WITH A FOCUS ON ASSIGNED PRODUCT LINES
    • Uphold the editorial quality of BJU Press products in both print and electronic forms
    • Interview and recommend potential new hires
    • Coordinate freelance editors (locate freelancers, figure costs and draft contracts, serve as the in-house contact point for freelance editorial work)
    • Ensure on-time completion of work in the areas of project planning, developmental editing, copyediting, production editing, proofreading, and post-production proofing
    • Be committed to ongoing process improvement and editorial updates
    • Perform editing and proofreading work as necessary to support the department
  • PROVIDE LEADERSHIP TO THE EDITORIAL PRODUCT-LINE STAFF
    • Coordinate staffing levels, assignments, and schedules for project editors
    • Evaluate employee performance
    • Provide for training, coaching, and resources for employee development
    • Communicate organizational goals, philosophy, and priorities
    • Support optimum working conditions and foster department morale
    • Collaborate with other members of the editorial management team
  • REPRESENT THE DEPARTMENT TO STAKEHOLDERS AND CUSTOMERS
    • Report to the Editorial Manager about project status, product-line resources, unresolved problems, and recommendations
    • Represent the editorial department to other BJU Press departments on the product-line level
    • Contribute to corporate editorial initiatives 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Leadership and people skills, team player, problem-solving abilities
  • Attention to detail, ability to plan and meet deadlines, good communication skills
  • Working knowledge of the publishing process, English grammar and mechanics, and elements of page layout

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree
Required Experience: Three to four years related experience
