POSITION SUMMARY: Works in conjunction with other staff editors and is responsible for the editorial quality of BJU Press K-12 and university-level textbooks and ancillary materials, in both print and electronic forms. The editorial assistant generally functions within the context of a product-line team and focuses on a specific academic subject area. The editorial assistant works to ensure that the author's message is communicated to the target audience clearly and accurately in all aspects of its presentation—text, graphics, and layout.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- In coordination with an editor or lead editor, perform various stages of editing, from manuscript development to pre-press (developmental editing, copyediting, production editing, proofreading, and checking proofs before printing)
- Maintain excellent communication with project team members through individual interaction and in meetings
- Learn and review departmental procedures, and suggest updates or improvements to the editorial manager as appropriate
- Uphold the BJU Press brand image and publishing standards
- Complete special projects as assigned, potentially including eTextbooks and CurriculumTrak checks
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Acceptable score on the department's editorial test
- Strong skills in English grammar, mechanics, and other characteristics of good writing
- An eye for attractive and user-friendly layout and design
- Proficiency in applying the Chicago Manual of Style and other reference sources (can be learned on the job)
- Ability to follow established procedures as well as work toward continual process improvement
- Good organizational skills with attention to detail
- Ability to meet deadlines and work with a team
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
Required Education: Bachelor's degree; Must be enrolled in post-graduate studies at Bob Jones University
