Network Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY: We are seeking a highly skilled Network Engineer to design, implement, and support our network infrastructure. As a member of the IT Operations team, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and security of our infrastructure.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Network Configuration and Installation: Set up and install network hardware and services to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Maintenance and Upgrades: Perform regular network maintenance and upgrades to keep systems up-to-date and functioning efficiently.
  • Performance Monitoring: Continuously monitor overall network performance and the availability of specific network hardware.
  • User Support: Provide tier 2 and 3 support to users, addressing complex network issues and ensuring timely resolution.
  • Policy Compliance: Adhere to all policies and change management procedures to maintain a robust network infrastructure.
  • Technical Proficiency: Stay current with industry trends by reading technical reference manuals and learning from colleagues.
  • Vendor Collaboration: Work closely with vendors and other IT staff to resolve network-related problems.
  • Documentation: Preserve organizational knowledge by thoroughly documenting processes, symptoms, causes, and solutions for future reference.
  • Project Leadership: Participate in and take a leadership role in IT projects as needed.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by the manager.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency with Networking Systems: Experience with Juniper EX Series Switches, Palo Alto Firewalls, Aruba, FortiNAC and Mist networking and wireless systems.
  • Microsoft Azure Networking: Experience with virtual networks, network security groups, VPN Gateway, and others.
  • Networking Protocols Expertise: knowledge of networking protocols such as 802.1Q, RSTP, LACP, DHCP, and others.
  • Technical Understanding: Strong understanding of the OSI and TCP/IP models.
  • Analytical Skills: Excellent analytical skills to diagnose and resolve network issues effectively.
  • Communication Skills: Superior written and oral communication skills to convey technical information clearly and concisely.
  • Continuous Learning: Willingness and aptitude to learn new skills, technologies, and processes.
  • Team Collaboration: Ability to work both independently as an individual contributor and collaboratively as a team player.
  • Adaptability: Ability to adapt as IT adjusts in its functionality to meet evolving needs.
  • Institutional Understanding: Understanding of the University's goals and objectives to align IT strategies with institutional priorities.

Certificates & Licenses:  Network+, Juniper or other network certifications a plus
