General Ledger Manager

Position Summary: The broad objective of this position is to provide leadership and oversight of the general accounting and reporting activities for Bob Jones University (BJU) and any other entity for which BJU serves as financial manager through contracts (together the Accountable Entities).  Specifically, this position is responsible for complete oversight of the processing of financial transactions, account reconciliation & analysis, fixed assets, and miscellaneous billing and documentation (reports, schedules, etc.).

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead and manage GL Staff including workload, special projects, continuous improvement and develop staff competencies
  • Plans, coordinates, and directs the activities of general accounting and bookkeeping staff.
  • Supervises the monthly GL close for the Accountable Entities
  • Reviews and approves staff journal entries and account reconciliations each month.
  • Coordinates, reviews and approves certain internal and external financial reporting for the Accountable Entities including monthly reporting package, and audited financial statements.
  • Responsible for overseeing the recordkeeping and reporting for fixed assets for the Accountable Entities.
  • Coordinates preparation of financial statements and fulfillment of accounting-related requests in conjunction with the audit of those statements.
  • Devises and recommends new or modified accounting systems or procedures to provide complete and accurate financial and statistical reporting as well as appropriate internal accounting controls and designs and maintains an up-to-date accounting procedures manual at all times.
  • Stands ready at all times for periodic audits by outside parties.
  • Remains current on new accounting guidance and is able to research, conclude, document and implement new technical pronouncements and new transactions impacting the financial statements of the Accountable Entities.
  • Serve as backup of all Treasury functions, including banking systems, cash management programs, cash receipts and disbursements accounting, ACH/Wire transfers, credit card processing, regulatory compliance activity, and investment accounting and reporting.
  • Offers interpretations, solutions, and strategies, based upon work performed, which contribute to the successful realization of the company’s goals and objectives.
  • Provides motivation and constructive counseling to staff.
  • Completes performance evaluations on a timely basis.
  • Develops staff competencies and skills.
  • Implements and maintains established financial policies and plans.
  • Recognizes and observes all company and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Focuses on achieving departmental and organizational objectives.
  • Maintains professional affiliations and enhance professional growth.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor degree in Accounting required
  • Three or more years' relevant financial accounting experience required

COMPUTER SKILLS:

  • Microsoft Word and Excel

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree
Required Experience: Three to four years related experience
