Freshman English Assistant (GA)- Fall 2025- Spring 2026

Position Summary: Nine-month, academic graduate assistant energized by the opportunity to help freshmen succeed through facilitating En 101 and 102, grading, and meeting one-on-one. Position begins August 2025. This Academic GA position is only available to those pursuing post-graduate studies at Bob Jones University.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Meeting regularly with students on an individual basis for tutoring/mentoring
  • Grading assigned compositions and providing direct feedback to students, both orally and in writing
  • Staffing the Writing Center
  • Clerical responsibilities in En 101 or En 102 classes
    • Taking and reporting attendance
    • Distributing handouts
    • Collecting papers and exercises
    • Monitoring student submissions to Canvas
    • Grading quizzes and tests (GradeMaster)
  • Performing any other tasks as assigned by the lecture professor, the division chair, or the dean
  • Performing university-related duties as assigned (e.g., student check-in in August, AACS in April)

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Critical thinking and reading skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Communication skills in one-on-one tutoring situations
  • Ability to write academic prose well
  • Bachelor’s degree in English or Creative Writing preferred (Applicants with other degrees will be considered as well.)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word
