Director of Athletics

Position Summary: The Director of Athletics is responsible for all aspects of the intercollegiate and intramural athletics programs at Bob Jones University.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Lead an athletic program that results in a Christ-honoring testimony, enhances the public perception of the university, and supports comprehensive growth of student athletes and staff.
  • Align department philosophy and mission with the philosophy and mission of the University.
  • Ensure that department sponsored events are conducted in an appropriate manner to maximize their spiritual and co-curricular value to constituents and key stakeholders.
  • Provide visionary leadership to align departmental strategic initiatives with presidential and institutional initiatives. The athletic director reports to and advises the president on all athletic and related matters.
  • Work in conjunction with the Vice President for Advancement and Alumni to develop and lead athletic advancement initiatives, build relationships, and raise funds for the Bruins Athletic Club.
  • Oversee a comprehensive department calendar that promotes academic success and participation in institutional requirements and supports strategic athletic success.
  • Support a robust intercollegiate and intramural program.
  • Oversee an intramural director and staff.
  • Oversee a Compliance Coordinator and lead a culture of compliance within the NCAA and NCCAA organizations.
  • Represent the University in all athletic affiliation meetings. Serving where appropriate on committees and task forces.
  • Represent the University with entities and vendors providing services that enhance the Bruins athletic program.
  • Represent the University with governmental and regulatory organizations and ensure the communication of pertinent information to the appropriate stakeholders.
  • Lead athletic department meetings, Leadership Team meetings, SAAC Leadership meetings, and direct report meetings with head coaches and select staff.
  • Participate in the University’s Strategic Leadership Committee meetings, administrative conference meetings, and direct report meetings with the President. 
  • Oversee an Assistant Athletic Director for Communication and Marketing to maintain athletic performance records, develop and grow summer camp programs, ensure the appropriate dissemination of the Bruins brand through website and social media platforms that aligns with institutional policies, and pursue sponsorship opportunities within the community.
  • Maintain and lead staff in enforcing the Bruins Athletic Department Policy Manual.
  • Maintain and lead staff in enforcing the Bruins Student Athlete Manual.
  • Oversee a Senior Associate Athletic Director to enhance and maintain athletic facilities in cooperation with the University’s Facilities Management team.
  • Develop annual budgets in conjunction with coaches and staff, and provide control and accountability.
  • Oversee a culture of recruiting good fit student athletes to represent the University in support of the Office of Admissions.
  • Champion an atmosphere of personal spiritual growth and professional development while providing appropriate feedback in accordance with applicable university procedures.
  • Champion a family atmosphere for all athletic department personnel and families and lead them in alignment with institutional policies and procedures.
  • Communicates the religious beliefs of BJU to students and student affiliates
  • Answers questions concerning faith, doctrine and creed of BJU to constituents, students, or those inquiring about BJU

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Evidence of ability to encourage, motivate, lead, instruct in righteousness, admonish and correct coaches, students, athletes on the basis of God’s Word
  • Proven ability to handle confidential information appropriately
  • Possess and communicate a Biblical worldview and integrate biblical principles into the athletics program
  • Exemplify a biblical role model for students and colleagues
  • Effective in oral and written communication
  • Professional in appearance and presentation
  • Disciplined time management skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Acute attention for details
  • Ability to maneuver in and around the athletic fields and facilities
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Experience in intercollegiate athletics or athletic administration
  • Committed to personal professional development
  • Participate in appropriate professional organizations

COMPUTER SKILLS:

  • Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree required, Master's preferred
Required Experience: Five or more years related experience
