POSITION SUMMARY: Oversees the completion of both made-to-order and stock costumes for theatrical productions, as well as concert wardrobe.


  • Collaborates with the Designer, and the Pattern Maker on the understanding and breakdown of costume sketches, making written notes and communicating details to the staff
  • Directly supervises costume staff and students
    • Makes written daily work assignments, maintains the daily assignment record book
    • Assures that projects are ready to move into construction phase with all necessary materials and supplies provided
    • Personally checks on progress of construction, and approves completion of finished work
    • Follows up personally with staff/students concerning necessary corrections/changes to work
  • Oversees costume progress with appropriate documentation, and expedites work within scheduled deadlines
  • Supervises fabric acquisition and inventory, along with other shop supplies
  • Oversees smooth transition of costumes from shop to dress rehearsal/performance phase
  • Supervises post-production phase, including costume breakdown, cleaning and storage
  • Oversees shop equipment, including routine machine maintenance and submitting repair requests to Manager
  • Supervises general safety awareness and training in safe operation of shop equipment
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Costume Dept Supervisor/Manager
  • Routinely communicates directly with Supervisor/Manager


  • High School required. Bachelor’s degree in costume/garment construction, or Apparel and Textile Design preferred
  • Previous experience in creation of production costumes, and modern apparel required. Previous professional work experience in manufacturing helpful


  • Knowledge of and general experience in theatrical cutting, stitching and crafts
  • Demonstrated experience in management
  • Basic knowledge of costume history
  • Working knowledge of costume materials including, but not limited to: fabrics, notions, crafts supplies
  • Working knowledge of machinery used in the costume industry including, but not limited to: single and multi-needle sewing machines, steam irons and cutting tools
  • Working knowledge of safety standards and their implementation
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent organization skills

Required Education: High school graduate or GED
Required Experience: One to two years related experience
