Central Plant Steam Mechanic

POSITION SUMMARY:  Work with the Central Plant Operator, the Energy & Controls Department, and the Plumbing & HVAC Departments to maintain the campus wide steam distribution system.



  • In cooperation with coworkers in the Central Plant, perform monthly inspections of all steam distribution systems on campus verifying operation and checking for leaks.

  • Make repairs as necessary to resolve leaks and to maintain in good operating condition pressure reducing stations, heat exchangers, condensate pumping systems, & Leslie domestic hot water heating systems.

  • Resolve valve leaks and notify supervisor of any steam line leaks that will need to be resolved by an outside contractor. 

  • Cross train coworkers. 

  • Repair pumps and motors as needed.


  • Ability to read and interpret as well as document plans and schematics
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Availability to be on call during off hours
  • Aptitude to learn new technologies
  • Willingness to stay with a project through completion
  • Ability to function with frequent interruptions
  • Good analytical skills
  • Valid driver's license
  • Not afraid to get a dirty, work in the heat and in mechanical rooms and tunnels where these systems are located
  • Willingness and patience to learn & follow direction from supervisor
  • Microsoft Word


Required Education: High School diploma or GED
Required Experience: 1-2 years: related experience
