Position Summary:  As a BJU Press editor, you are part of a team that embraces the mission of producing K-12 educational materials with a biblical worldview for Christian schools and homeschools. Your workday might include copyediting a textbook manuscript or marking corrections on the page proofs of a teacher’s edition. As an editor, you are immersed in the details of a project. Your goal is to ensure that the writer’s message is communicated to the target audience clearly and accurately through all the elements of a product—text, graphics, and layout.


  • Uphold the BJU Press brand image and publishing standards; suggest updates to the Editorial Manager as appropriate
  • Support the writer to implement BJU Press educational philosophy and mandates
  • Maintain excellent communication with project team members through individual interaction and in meetings
  • Provide assistance to the Editorial Manager in the mentoring of student workers to fulfill the BJU mission statement
  • Complete special projects as assigned
  • Direct the editing of BJU Press products from manuscript through pre-press, as outlined in the following four points:
  1. Developmental Editing—Read and evaluate the overall soundness of a writer's manuscript from a broad perspective; make corrections and/or query the writer in areas such as length, organization, factual and biblical accuracy, and grade-level appropriateness; may include subject-related research
  2. Copyediting—Read and apply intensive editing to the writer's revised manuscript with the goal of correctness and consistency in every detail of the manuscript
  3. Production Editing—Read and edit page proofs, with the goal of a final product that is user-friendly, finished on time, and as error-free as possible in text, layout, photos, and illustrations; coordinate corrections with the writer and in-house or outsourced production personnel; evaluate and make judgments on the work done by proofreaders 
  4. Checking Printing Division Proofs—Check proofs to ensure that electronic files have transferred cleanly to the printing division; oversee corrections and approve pages for printing


  • Master of English grammar and mechanics, including the ability to recognize and repair problems with sentence structure and paragraph development and to identify and correct problems with unity, coherence, logic, and precision
  • Proficiency in applying the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Ability to follow established procedures and also to engage in process improvement
  • Good organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work with a team and negotiate solutions
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Computer aptitude
  • Teaching experience and/or specific academic subject knowledge (science, history, Bible, etc.) desirable
  • Acceptable performance on the BJU Press editorial test
  • This is an on-site position.
