Accounting Specialist

Position Summary: Do you have accounting skills and experience?  Consider joining our BJU Press Business Office Team—eighteen people who enjoy their work, serving the Press in all business functions. As an Accounting Specialist, you will be helping in multiple areas.  This position allows for some schedule flexibility and has opportunities for cross-training and working on projects with the entire team. If you want a place to work where the atmosphere is congenial and the mission important, apply today. This position works with day-to-day accounting operations including GL, AP and Sales/Use Tax for BJU Press Business Office.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performing of accounting functions of the BJU Press Business Office
  • Producing and reviewing of financial reports
  • Producing periodic financial reports in a timely manner
  • Assisting with department budgets
  • Assisting external auditors with annual business audit
  • Assisting with project management
  • Learning and working with new software and system implementations
  • Accessing external websites for financial information and research
  • Reviewing and approving contracts by BJU Press as needed
  • Assisting with sales/use tax calculations and filing of tax returns for all states
  • Staying current with tax laws in order to keep BJU Press compliant both sales and income/franchise taxes.
  • Resolving assessments and other tax issues including preparing for and working with auditors
  • Acting as liaison between BJU Press and state sales tax departments
  • Overseeing and assisting in filing of annual reports with Secretaries of State and filing business licenses
  • Assisting with accounts payable functions; entering invoices and selecting for payment
  • Assisting with and reviewing costing and balance sheet accounts
  • Assisting with costing analysis
  • Reconciling monthly bank card statements and processing for payment
  • Communicating effectively with internal departments, vendors, and customers

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Sound knowledge of accounting principles and practices
  • Ability to act with propriety and maintain confidentiality of business information
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks at the same time
  • Ability to build relationships with other BJU Press departments
  • Good computer skills, proficiency in accounting software, and ability to learn new software programs
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal departments and external customers/vendors
  • Accuracy with numbers and details
  • Experience with creating financial statements
  • Experience with general ledger functions and with month-end/year-end closing processes
  • A bachelor's degree in accounting, finances, or business administration is preferred

COMPUTER SKILLS:

  • Microsoft Excel, Access
  • Vertex - Sales tax software and Microsoft Dynamics - Business Financial
