Academic Coach/First-Year Advisor

Position Summary: An academic coach/first year advisor seeks out and assists all students for the purpose of strengthening specific academic skills in order to improve the students’ academic achievement. An academic coach/first year student advisor will advise approximately 250 first year students.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Support the operation mission of the Academic Resource Center
  • Coach students on a regular basis who are seeking guidance
  • Help students develop solid academic skills in the areas of reading skills, note-taking skills, test taking skills, study skills, etc.
  • Aid students as they develop effective life skills as stewards of the gifts God has given them
  • Coach students to develop academic action plans for students needing help
  • Work with faculty to aid student success
  • Support students as they strive to achieve their academic goals.
  • Attend workshops related to student success
  • Advise first year students in the scheduling of their classes and in maintaining an acceptable GPA in their chosen major
  • Keep track of grades of advisees and meet with them when deemed necessary to ensure their academic success
  • Aid in teaching Uni 101 and Uni 191.
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of BJU academic programs.
  • Knowledge of educational theories and learning styles in post-secondary learning environments
  • Knowledge of the literature on college student success.
  • Self-motivated
  • Ability to identify, define, and evaluate problems; and develop appropriate strategies and solutions
  • Ability to work with administrators, faculty, staff, GAs, and students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills. Ability to make effective oral and written presentations. Proven ability to effectively and professionally communicate using tact and diplomacy.

Required Education: Master's Degree
Required Experience: One to two years previous related experience
