VP for Student Development & Success/Chief Student Development Officer

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the president and in collaboration with the provost, the vice president is responsible for pursuing the University’s vision, mission, and objectives for Student Development and Success (Student Life). The vice president formulates and executes plans and programs for the divisions and functions within Student Development and Success including student discipleship; student leadership, activities, and organizations; residence life; student conduct; student care (counseling and physical health); student learning support services; and student retention. The vice president serves as the student voice on the executive team.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Leadership:
    • Strengthen the University's value proposition by
      • positioning Student Development and Success as an essential contributor to the University's goals for student outcomes (spiritually, personally, socially, physically, and intellectually)
      • implementing the President's vision for student discipleship and character and leadership development
      • implementing a relational and learning-oriented residence hall experience
      • implementing a principle-driven, edifying, relational, redemptive, and fair approach to student conduct
      • collaborating with academic stakeholders to implement a biblical worldview emphasis
      • collaborating with academic stakeholders to implement an intentional experiential learning emphasis
      • collaborating with the Center for Global Opportunities to encourage ministry, evangelism, and community service by the student body
      • communicating, in support of the President and in collaboration with the communications and marketing teams, the University's Student Development mission and goals to students, parents, and other stakeholders
    • Lead achievement of student retention and student success goals by
      • partnering with faculty and appropriate academic and enrollment teams to cultivate a student learning culture
      • developing and implementing appropriate student support services (orientation, academic resource center, first year experience, tutoring, advising, etc.)
    • Lead as a change agent by
      • developing, mentoring and empowering Student Development and Success staff to achieve the President's vision and goals
      • creating a three year plan with key milestones that achieves results in keeping with the University’s mission and President's vision and goals
  • Management:
    • Meet financial objectives by developing and managing unit budgets
    • Manage personnel within Student Development and Success
    • Oversee various divisions and functions within Student Development and Success
    • Develop opportunities for student activities and student recreation

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Understanding of and agreement with BJU’s mission
  • Understanding of student development within a Christian liberal arts higher education environment
  • Spiritual maturity
  • Vision and leadership
  • Ability to partner and collaborate across functional units
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational ability

Required Education: Master's Degree
Required Experience: Five or more years related experience
