Press Business Office Accounting Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY:  We are looking for an individual with accounting skills and experience who can become part of our Press Business Office Team.  This is a team of 17 people who enjoy their work, serving BJU Press in all business functions.  You will join a department staff of three to help with some of these functions.  There will be opportunities for cross-training and working with the entire team on projects, and this position allows for some schedule flexibility.  Our team recently moved into a renovated office area which is complete with new electronically height- adjustable workstations, allowing us to change our desk position from sitting to standing in seconds.  Each workstation has two wide-screen monitors.  As a team we actively pray for, care for, and help one another!

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Accounting

  • Performing accounting functions of the BJU Press Business Office
  • Producing and reviewing financial reports
  • Assisting with department budgets, project management, and reviewing contracts
  • Assisting external auditors with annual business audit
  • Accessing external websites for financial information and research
  • Assisting with Accounts Payable functions (entering invoices and selecting for payment)
  • Assisting with and reviewing costing and balance sheet accounts
  • Reconciling monthly bank card statements

Sales Tax

  • Assisting with Vertex sales/use tax compilation and filing tax returns with all states
  • Staying current with tax laws in order to keep BJU Press compliant
  • Resolving sales tax assessments and other tax issues (including preparing for and working with auditors, if needed)
  • Acting as liaison between BJU Press and State sales tax departments
  • Filing annual reports with Secretaries of State and renewing business licenses

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Knowledge of general office accounting practices
  • Ability to act with propriety and maintain confidentiality of business information
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks at the same time
  • Good computer skills and ability to learn software programs
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal departments and external customers/vendors
  • Accuracy with numbers and details
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of general ledger functions and the creating of financial statements
  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting, finance, or business administration is preferred, but not required

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree
Required Experience: Three to four years related experience
