Piano Technician (Student)

POSITION SUMMARY: Maintain the 175+ pianos owned by BJU and used by our campus constituency and occasionally move instruments utilizing the best equipment in the industry (we have a variety of pieces of equipment, depending upon the particular move requirements).

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • General knowledge of piano tuning; may use an electronic tuning device
  • Skillfully and efficiently disassemble/assemble any model of piano in an effort to extract extraneous material, clean any section of any piano, and to realign sections of the piano
  • Rudimentary knowledge of piano action regulation, including lubrication of all moving parts, replacing punchings and action cloth, and hammer steam-voicing
  • Piano moving skills safely using packing blankets, strapping methods, piano dollies and piano skid board and standard professional equipment such as the Piano Horse and All-terrain Piano Transporter
  • Install and maintain atmospheric control units such as dehumidifiers and Piano Lifesaver Systems from the Dampp-Chaser Corporation
  • Computer inputting in the BJU Microsoft Access and Excel databases to archive all work accomplished and projected
  • Assist Ed Rea in general piano maintenance of BJU pianos

  • Must (occasionally) push/pull up to 100 lbs.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be enrolled as a student at Bob Jones University
  • Piano tuning
  • Using basic hand tools and specialty tools, and gluing skills, for assembling/disassembling and maintaining and regulating piano parts
  • Maintenance and installation skills for the Dampp-Chaser Piano-Lifesaver system
