IT Business Requirements Analyst

POSITION SUMMARY: The Business Requirements Analyst’s role is to serve as a liaison between business units and Information Technologies. Understanding and representing the business units is a key part of the position. This role will work with the end users and their supervisors to understand and document current processes and changes needed to meet the business unit’s needs. The Business Requirements Analyst will remain involved in change implementation to ensure goals and objectives are met. The Business Requirements Analyst will play a pivotal role in ensuring IT understanding of business requirements.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with business users to become familiar with their applications, processes, and needs.
  • Work with business users to identify and document changes required to improve or replace current applications and processes.
  • Collaborate with project sponsors to determine project scope and vision.
  • Assist the business unit in establishing the business case – financial and process efficiency justification for the proposed change.
  • Identify and establish general scope and parameters to define the desired project outcome, organizational impact, and metrics.
  • Gather requirements from the business unit via questionnaires, surveys, site visits, user stories, workflow storyboards, use cases, and other methods.
  • Analyze and verify requirements for completeness, consistency, comprehensibility, feasibility, and conformity to applicable standards.
  • Develop and utilize standard templates to accurately and concisely write requirements specifications.
  • Assist in translating the conceptual user requirements into functional requirements in a clear manner that is comprehensible to IT and project teams.
  • Research, review, and analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of existing requirements gathering processes and develop strategies for enhancing or further leveraging these processes.
  • Develop and conduct reviews of the business requirements to ensure that requirement specifications are correctly interpreted.
  • Manage and track the status of requirements throughout the project lifecycle, redefining as necessary.
  • Communicate changes and enhancements to business requirements to project managers, sponsors, and other stakeholders, ensuring issues and solutions are understood.
  • Assist in conducting research on software and hardware products to meet agreed upon requirements.
  • Where the desired business change indicates the need for an outside vendor solution, generate and coordinate analysis of a vendor Request for Proposal (RFP).
  • Participate in quality assurance of purchased solutions to ensure features and functions have been enabled and optimized.
  • Participate in ongoing continuous improvement efforts for business applications and processes.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated knowledge or ability to quickly learn the organization’s core business process and operations.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Proven experience with business requirements analysis, elicitation, verification, and methodology development.
  • Ability to apply statistical and other research methods to systems issues and products as required.
  • Able to exercise independent judgment and take action on it.
  • Excellent listening, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Logical and efficient, with keen attention to detail.
  • Highly self motivated and directed.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks.
  • Ability to track multiple work assignments and assess priorities.
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Excellent understanding of the University’s goals and objectives.
  • Experience working on project teams or project management experience is desired but not required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

CERTIFICATES & LICENSES:Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) certification desired, but not required. Candidate should be willing to pursue CBAP certification. An MBA degree is preferred but not required.

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree
Required Experience: One to two years related experience
