Freshman English Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY: 

  • Grader and facilitator for a section of En 101 or EN 102 each semester
  • 9-month Academic GA position 
  • Position open August 2018

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Meeting regularly with students on an individual basis for tutoring/mentoring
  • Grading assigned compositions and providing direct feedback to students, both orally and in writing
  • Staffing the Writing Center
  • Clerical responsibilities in En 101 or En 102 classes
  • Taking and reporting attendance
  • Distributing handouts
  • Collecting papers and exercises
  • Monitoring student submissions to BJUOnline
  • Grading quizzes and tests (GradeMaster)
  • Performing any other tasks as assigned by the lecture professor, the division chair, or the dean
  • Performing university-related duties as assigned (e.g., student check-in in August, AACS in April)

*Applicants who are pursuing an MA in English will also have the possibility of teaching a section of En 101 or 102 at the point they have completed 18 graduate-level credits in En-prefixed courses in their programs. 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be enrolled for post-graduate studies at Bob Jones University, graduate studies preferred
  • Critical thinking and reading skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Communication skills in one-on-one tutoring situations
  • Ability to write academic prose well
  • Bachelor’s degree in English or Creative Writing preferred (Applicants with other degrees will be considered as well.)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word
